The shofar represents the wailing cry of the lost child who is now remorseful that he has strayed and lost contact with his father, possibly forfeiting his relationship to him, altogether. This child is in each of us, and so is the longing to feel safely connected, again, to our G-d and the essence of His Mercy. Chosen for its simplicity, the shofar symbolizes the incorruptible nature of the soul, the depth of our very being which transcends the conventional modes of communication. The shofar's shattering wail arouses in us the realization that there maybe no way back to the path of reuniting with our G-d because of the depths to which we fell... except that if He, so chooses it and shows us graciousness. Consequently, during the time of the High Holy Days at the season of repentance, we elicit His Mercy sounding the shofar.
